Shopping Cart - Tax Settings - Avalara (Fundamentals)

Avalara AvaTax is a cloud-based solution that automates transaction tax calculations and the tax filing process. Avalara provides real-time tax calculation using tax content from more than 12,000 US taxing jurisdictions and over 200 countries, ensuring your transaction tax is calculated based on the most current tax rules.

Note: in order to use this module, you must first set up an external account with Avalara. A sales representative from Avalara will reach out to you if you are interested in proceeding to implement AvaTax on your Build website.

In this section of the user manual, you will learn about the Shopping Cart - Tax Settings - Avalara module. This module enables you to Connect to AvaTax so that Avalara Tax can be applied to your Shopping Cart. Now that you have learned the fundamental idea, you can click on  1 Set Avalara above and continue with Tax Settings - Avalara - Connect to AvaTax.

(1) Connect to AvaTax

• ● 1 Connect to AvaTax. In this area, you will complete the necessary steps to Connect to AvaTax.

• Account Number. In this field, you must enter the Account Number provided during your AvaTax account activation process.

• License Key. In this field, you must enter the software License Key provided during your AvaTax account activation process.

• Company Code. In this field, you must enter the Company Code which is a company profile identifier found in the AvaTax admin console.

• Default Location. This dropdown menu enables you to select the Default Location from the Locations you have added in the Locations module.

• Sandbox [Enable]. Check this box to enable Sandbox mode for testing.

• [Text Connection]. Click on this button to Test Connection. 

• [Save]. Click on this button to Save any changes to the above fields.  

Now that you have completed Connect to AvaTax, you can continue to the next step (AvaTax Configuration).

(2) AvaTax Configuration

In this section, you will complete the steps necessary for AvaTax Configuration.

• ● 2 AvaTax Configuration. In these fields, you can enter various credentials and specifications for AvaTax Configuration.

• Document Recording [Enable Document Committing/Submission]. Clicking this checkbox enables tax document submission to Avalara’s AvaTax service for record keeping. With this setting enabled, transactions will be posted and committed to the AvaTax Admin Console.

• Default Freight Code. This field will display the Default Avalara AvaTax Code used for Freight/Shipping.

• Logging [Enable client side logging]. This checkbox enables you to log detailed transaction activity for troubleshooting purposes. Enable this option only when instructed by support.

• Address Validation [Enable Address Validation]. Clicking this checkbox enables Address Validation. 

• [Save]. Click on this button to Save any changes to the above fields.

Now that you have completed the section on AutoTax Configuration, you can continue to the next section (AvaTax TaxCodes).

(3) AvaTax TaxCodes

In this section, you can enter unique TaxCodes for specific Product Types. This customized approach is useful and necessary, as different items may require different TaxCodes to be applied. For example, a Gift Card should be processed free of Sales Tax.

• ● 3 AvaTax TaxCodes. This section displays all the Product Types and their corresponding TaxCodes.

• Product Type. In this column, you will see all the Product Types listed in your system. This list reflects the one that is shown in your Product Types - Product Specifications module.

• TaxCode. In this column, you will find fields corresponding to Product Types. In these fields, you can enter TaxCodes for specific Product Types.

• Save. Click on this button to Save any changes to the above fields.
